The BFS Panther, a mascot history

Last month, on the BFS Facebook page, an alumna asked about the BFS Panther, the mascot of the BFS Athletics program. The Panther is relatively new to our athletic program as both our nickname and costumed mascot. BFS Athletic Director David Gardella shared his understanding of the history of the BFS Panther and further information was found among school records in the BFS Archives.

In the 1998-1999 school year, Henry Spinella was our Athletic Director: he noted that one of our Upper School student-athletes felt that BFS athletics could benefit from a costumed mascot to help promote our athletics program and that this student was working to make it a reality. A "Fighting Quaker" was suggested, yet that idea was set aside as there have always been those who feel that such a mascot is inappropriate, even thought it is an oxymoron. A fox, likely in reference to Quakerism's founder George Fox was also suggested. Henry Spinella agreed that BFS should have such a mascot, as did the school's administration.

The beginning of the 1999-2000 school year saw a school-wide vote. Five mascots were suggested for the consideration of the entire school: a superhero, a panther, a penguin, a bear and a dog. David Gardella recalled that "the penguin came in second... but the Panther came in first." Records reveal that the vote was not even close: ballot came in with 143 votes for the penguin and 175 for the panther. It seems a BFS Panther mural was created by an artist in the Pearl Street gym for the following school year. The actual panther mascot costume seems to have finally arrived in the 2006-2007 school year.

It should be noted that our former student newspaper, The Panther Press, obviously chose a title that reflected our panther nickname and mascot. The first publication of The Panther Press in 2003 was an important moment for our school as BFS had then been without a regularly published student newspaper for many years. Our current student newspaper is The Willoughby Street Journal, a title which will likely be retired when the Upper School moves to One MetroTech in September, 2015.

During the 20th Century, particularly in the media, we were often known as "The Quakers." Photos from the 1970s and 1980s show that some of our athletics t-shirts - and perhaps even uniforms - included a depiction of a man wearing a traditional Quaker hat. In 1955, BFS Upper School students selected a "Quakerman" as the BFS mascot, as mentioned in The Life. According to 1942's Seventy Five Years of Brooklyn Friends School, we had been known for several years as "the Fighting Quakers." Of course, the Fighting Quakers is the athletics nickname of Sidwell Friends in Washington, DC and, your historian's 2010 visit to Sidwell noted a near-caricature of a"Fighting Quaker." Guilford College's athletics teams are also known as the Fighting Quakers. All schools that use "The Fighting Quakers" for nicknames fully understand and acknowledge that the term is an oxymoron.

Play an important role at BFS - Friends Forever!

Read the Brooklyn Daily Eagle article
"BFS Bests Calhoun for Volleyball Title"
Great moment last week at BFS: our Boys Varsity Volleyball team won the PSAA championship, an amazing feat for this first-year team. Our team's ranking, as of today at maxpreps.com: 120th in the U.S, 4th in New York State and 3rd in New York City. Congratulations to these student-athletes who will all return to boys volleyball next year, to our coaches and athletic department, and to BFS, our school which makes such moments possible for all of us. It is wonderful to have record of this achievement, so this historian once again wishes our school had a more complete record of all similar achievements at BFS, which brings us to the important role you can play.

There have been many great athletes and teams at BFS, some won championships, invitational tournaments, and many alumni played with college and professional teams. Unfortunately, not all of our school's important athletic moments are noted anywhere in the records of BFS. Our Athletic Director David Gardella has been compiling his own list of BFS championships, our college and professional alumni-athletes, and other athletic milestones from 1996 to the present, but BFS needs your assistance in gaining a more complete record for all years earlier.

This historian is assisting by compiling a record of BFS athletic achievements for all years prior to 1996, that can be added to the record now kept by the Athletics Department. To do this, one can search the historic Brooklyn Daily Eagle in the hope that BFS made the paper. Alternatively, one can pore through our school's incomplete run of student newspapers, newsletters, or yearbooks, hoping that an important moment for our school got even the briefest mention in our own publications. Such time-consuming efforts yielded the knowledge that we had a Boys Varsity Softball team that won at least four back-to-back league championships in the late 1970s. We have photographs that now preserve some of our older banners, but they do not shed nearly enough light. BFS simply needs your memories to fill in the blanks in its own history.

Please take a moment to reflect on your BFS memories, to share your knowledge of BFS athletic history and to let us know of the post-BFS athletic careers of alumni, some of whom may be reading this themselves.

Great moments in BFS Basketball, 1925 and today

1925, BFS Boys Basketball Team,
with the Friends School League
Championship Trophy
It's a great basketball season for BFS teams, so today let's look back 89 years ago to February of 1925, when BFS won the Friends Schools national title in boys basketball by defeating Wilmington Friends. The BFS Digital Archives has this photo of our 1925 boys basketball team, with the Friends School trophy, which rests just outside our lower gym at Pearl Street today.

Che bella voce!

Take a look back to 1993 for a fabulous rendition of the Star Spangled Banner at BFS, sung by Middle and Upper School science teacher and past athletic director Janet Villas. Big thanks for making this possible go straight out to several of my BFS colleagues: director of media services Andy Cohen for the transfer; current athletic director David Gardella for saving the original VHS; and, of course, to Janet for her beautiful voice and performance. And, wow, basketball uniforms have changed over time!

Finding BFS: Further Evidence

Some may remember that we published an article about the 1931 Football Team in 2006, honoring the 75th anniversary of their incredible feat, A Perfect Season - The Football Team of 1931. Ironically, while scanning new photos for the BFS Sampler album on the Photos page of the Digital Archives, I discovered that there had once been a plaque at BFS honoring the acclaimed football team of that 1931-1932 school year. The photos below illustrate how short institutional memory can be. And it's not just BFS, believe me, such memory lapses happen everywhere.

The first photo is of a wood shop class, taken in the late 1930s. What is on the shelf on the rear wall?

Hitting 1000 Points

Last week, BFS senior Janna Joissainte became the first woman in known BFS memory to score 1,000 points in her basketball career at Brooklyn Friends School. Janna scored her 1,000th point on February 20, 2013, and she ended with 1,016 career points.

Blue Pride: State Champs! The BFS Varsity Basketball Team of 2003

BFS celebrates its remarkable athletic program and its athletes past, present and future this Saturday, February 23 with a 5 pm screening of the documentary Blue Pride State Champs, followed by a special reception. It's the 10th anniversary of the 2003 Boys Varsity Basketball Team's against-all-odds season that led to victory at Glen Falls for BFS and which is chronicled in the film. Read a little more about this exciting moment in BFS history at Blue Pride State Champs.

Lovely Surprises

I typically hate surprises, but some are always appreciated: there is nothing quite like finding a BFS historic treasure in either a traditional or electronic mailbox. Every once in a while, kind people find BFS-related items among their personal collections and choose to share them with BFS, thinking (correctly) that BFS might wish to have them or that I, Susan Price '86, am so interested in BFS history that I'll definitely want them (people have come to know me pretty well).

BFS Field Hockey Team of 1936, from the 1936 Yearbook
